Bulls, Bears, and Maniacs

As the E-mini S&P 500 (/ES) continues its multi-year climb, a step back to the Monthly Chart reveals some critical warning signs that every long-term trader should have on their radar.

While the macro trend remains upward, several technical indicator patterns are flagging potential exhaustion. Here’s a breakdown of the primary bearish indicators to watch as we head toward the late 2026/2027 threshold. I love to look at the monthly chart to get a better feel for the technical landscape. With all of the recent panic from politicians and media over the "dangers of AI" this seems ripe for a pullback. That might happen very soon. Or it might happen in early 2027.

1. Sequential Red Down-Arrow Resistance Markers (Overextension)
One of the most visually obvious patterns on this chart is the appearance of red downward triangle markers over the peaks. Historically, these markers have coincided with key points of trend exhaustion and subsequent multi-month pullbacks (as seen back in 2024 and 2025).
We are currently seeing a cluster of these red resistance markers at the absolute highest point of the visual trend, suggesting that momentum is reaching highly overextended levels on a macro scale.
2. A Widening Gap Above Key Support
The price bars have stretched far above the major long-term trendlines (the light gray and lower dark gray MA/moving support lines). On a monthly chart, the "rubber band" can only stretch so far before the price is historically drawn back to its mean:
The current distance between the latest candlestick and the light gray trendline is significantly wide.
Historically, every time the index has overstretched this far above its baseline (as seen mid-2024), a corrective phase follows to test that support. A reversion to the mean would require a notable downward correction from these highs.
3. The "Crosshair" of Critical S&P Support Levels
The technical grid overlay highlighting the transition into 2027 (the horizontal and vertical intersection) point toward a potential structural reckoning. If the current peak begins to stall, the dotted blue indicator—which has served as a reliable dynamic guide—will be the first line of defense. A break below this dotted blue support on a monthly closing basis would validate the bearish divergence and likely trigger a test of the lower trendlines.
The Takeaway
On a monthly timeframe, patterns take a long time to play out, meaning this isn’t necessarily a sign to "short the market" tomorrow. However, with multiple red warning markers printing at historical trend extremes and a massive gap above long-term moving support, the /ES is flashing a distinct lack of buying power at these highs.
Watch the monthly closes closely: A failure to hold above the recent consolidation cluster could easily transition this long-term bull trend into a significant multi-month correction.
